Overview

Strathcona Provincial Park sits at the heart of Vancouver Island, and for many visitors, it’s the part they never expected. Most people picture surf towns, rainforests, and rugged coastlines but the Island also holds a high-elevation wilderness of alpine peaks, glacier-fed lakes, sprawling meadows, and vast, quiet ridgelines. This is Strathcona: a place where the landscape suddenly lifts into a dramatic alpine realm that feels worlds away from the ocean below. It is one of BC’s most underrated mountain regions, and exploring it surprises nearly every guest who ventures into it. It’s also a park with remarkable heritage. First identified for protection in 1910 and formally established in 1911, Strathcona is British Columbia’s first provincial park; a landscape shaped by early mountaineers, explorers, and First Nations who traveled these valleys long before modern recreation began. Today, much of its rugged interior remains wild, remote, and unchanged.

SIGNATURE ROUTES & CLASSIC OBJECTIVES

Strathcona Provincial Park is filled with classic objectives and wild corners that often inspire our custom itineraries, including the surreal blue waters of Cream Lake and the Bedwell alpine basins, the sweeping ridge-lines and tarns of the Augerpoint Traverse, the deep old-growth valleys leading to Landslide Lake beneath the walls of Colonel Foster, the steep and rewarding ascent of King’s Peak, and the broad summit ridges of Mount Albert Edward, one of the island’s most iconic non-technical peaks. Each of these routes showcases a different side of Strathcona’s underrated alpine world. From meadows and hanging valleys to rugged granite peaks and depending on the route we design together, your trip can range from moderate to advanced, with durations anywhere from 2 to 7 days.
