Overview

This is not your typical backpacking trip. The Nootka Trail is a wildlife walking safari through one of the most remote and ecologically rich coastlines in British Columbia. For thousands of years, Nootka Island has been home to the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples, and later became a key meeting point between Indigenous nations and early European explorers and traders. Today, the island remains wild and largely unchanged; a place where history, culture, and nature are inseparable. Traveling on foot along beaches, headlands, and rainforest, you’ll move through prime wildlife habitat where wolves, black bears, sea otters, whales, and bald eagles are commonly encountered. This point-to-point coastal traverse delivers new scenery every day, with remote oceanfront camps that invite both exploration and quiet reflection.

SIGNATURE ROUTES & CLASSIC OBJECTIVES

The Nootka Trail is a coastal walking safari through one of British Columbia’s most remote wild places. Trips begin and end in Tofino, where a floatplane carries you to the north end of Nootka Island; a true gateway into untouched wilderness. From there, we trek south along the island’s wild west coast, moving slowly on beaches, tidal shelves, headlands, and rainforest. The journey finishes in the historic village of Yuquot, where a floatplane returns you to Tofino. This isn’t just a hike but an immersive wildlife expedition for explorers, designed to put you deep into the habitat where wolves, black bears, sea otters and whales roam.
